Day One

It’s 18:30 now. We’re in “Van Zylsrus” near a campfire the camp firewaiting for the flames to dim so we can put our steaks on the grill. I’m starving!!!

Van Zylsrus… Can I call it a town? No I guess not. It’s about 200 kilometers from the nearest form of civilization, a few houses along a dirt road that stretches for miles & miles. It’s located near the Botswana border.

The T-bone strak was delicious!
You can’t find meat like this in Belgium. (because of the industrial meat breading I guess… wink)
Our little camp fire did its job. While eating we met the other guest whom was staying at the bed & breakfast: a real Afrikaner. (I think he already had a few drinks but he was very friendly.) He’s a construction engineer rebuilding the only hotel in Van Zylsrus. He immediately invited us to come have a look at the building site.

We woke up at 6:45 and prepared for an early morning game drive. The gates open at 7.

We are starving after a satisfying morning game drive.

Yesterday night It was hellish… A sandstorm came by around 6-7 in the evening: just when we started cooking. We got sand everywhere! Even our food was full of sand. We moved the car so it gave us a bit of extra protection against the sand.
We went to bed early.

day 8

Michiel Tuesday, May 22, 2007

It was really cold last night!! It was freezing. The car was completely frozen this morning. I couldn’t pack my tent as it was frozen too!
But we had to pack since we have to do 1100 kilometers today. We are trying to do it in one go. We don’t want to sleep somewhere tonight but in some warm beds in Jo’burg.
